In the fall of 1989, a group of collegiate women recognized the need to create an organization that would empower women from all cultural backgrounds. This vision led to the founding of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, with a focus on providing academic and social support for Latina women. On April 9, 1990, SLG was officially recognized as a sorority by the Panhellenic Council, marking the founding of this organization.
In the fall of 2009, a group of women at Washington State University expressed a strong interest in establishing a new sorority on campus. They were determined to bring Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., the largest Latina-based multicultural sorority, to WSU. This effort culminated on May 9, 2012, when Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. was officially founded at Washington State University.
