Our Legacy:

Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. Is the First Latina Based Sorority in the Pacific North West and at Washington State University. Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. was established on January 25, 1993, on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Our eight founders envisioned a sorority that will increase the number of women with a college education, provide mentors for youth, women, and under-represented communities, enhance the individual leader in each member and provide a family of lifelong support for sisters who live their lives by the pillars of Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity.

Our Mission:

A Latina-founded, multicultural organization that exists to:

● Increase the number of women with a college education and advanced degrees.

● Provide mentors for youth, women, and underrepresented communities.

● Provide a family of lifelong support for sisters who live their lives by the pillars of Honesty, Integrity, Leadership, Scholarship, and Unity.

Vision:

To be an innovative and international leader in the Greek Community, renowned for outstanding and diverse undergraduate chapters, prestigious and engaged alumnae, developing strong leaders, and providing a lifelong sisterhood.

Philanthropy:

EDUCATION WITH A FOCUS ON MENTORING YOUTH: Gamma Alpha Omega’s commitment to mentoring youth began in 2011 with the founding of Gamma Alpha Omega’s Emeralds for Education, which brought youth mentoring to our local communities through various organizations. We have worked to promote youth mentorship ever since. Gamma Alpha Omega knows the power of women to effect positive change and has proven it from our volunteer work to foster educational and mentoring programs and support Emeralds for Education. Our chapters support local and national organizations, volunteering many hours and generously fundraising for this cause. Programs and initiatives include:

– Mentoring Programs

– Book & Literacy Drives

– Student Panels

– Reading Buddy Program

– Thank Your Mentor Day

– National Mentoring Month

– School Supply Drives

We specifically support (Advancement Via Individual Determination) AVID (www.avid.org/), which is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach

HIV & AIDS AWARENESS: One of many purposes of our sorority is to support women, particularly women of color. Often times issues that affect these women are often ignored or set aside. Our chapters support HIV & AIDS Awareness as another philanthropy by educating communities about the difference between HIV & AIDS, how and where to get tested to know your status, and helping to stop the stigma of HIV & AIDS. Programs and initiatives include:

– World AIDS Day – AIDS Walks – Red Ribbon Fundraisers – HIV/AIDS Awareness Days We specifically support the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) (www.pedaids.org).
