Our History
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. is the first Latina-based sorority in the nation. We were founded in 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey by 17 independent and strong women who were eager to be at the forefront of an era of a new educational, political, and social consciousness. The year 1975 saw the birth of what started as a vision – an idea of an organization, a sisterhood that would cater to the needs of Latinas and, more importantly, the universal woman.
Zeta Sigma Chapter was founded at Washington State University in 2016 by 21 amazing women. Our local philanthropy is Alternatives to Violence of the Palouse
Our goals and motto
Our sorority goals are scholarly excellence, empowerment of the universal woman, political & cultural awareness, and community activism.
LTA has a motto, “Latin by tradition, not by definition.” As a non-exclusionary sorority open to all ethnicities and backgrounds, the women who join LTA today still feel the need to promote those same values on their campus.
Why LTA?
Lambda Theta Alpha was the first sorority of its kind. The pioneering actions of the sorority’s Founding Mothers have allowed independent women on campus to feel a sense of belonging while providing a space to achieve their highest academic and professional potential. As a result, Lambda Theta Alpha has come to define a new role for the universal woman – one with education, goals, and vision in hope of great success.
Our philanthropy
In 2010, Lambda Theta Alpha officially became a collegiate partner to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in an effort to have a larger and more united impact on a national philanthropic cause. The sorority is the first and only Latino Greek organization to commit to the hospital’s efforts to bring awareness to childhood cancer, life-threatening diseases and St. Jude within the Latino community and to fundraise for the hospital through a variety of events and programs.

We believe that all women alike should be given the opportunity to make their mark on the world. It is as a result of this that Lambda Theta Alpha prides itself on offering interested members recruitment activities that provide:

● the ability to form bonds with sisters and other women who are interested in the sorority
